ChatGPT-Canvas performs assisted review and automated revision of our academic articles, full process demo!

There was an update on ChatGPT This is an explanation of the new features of Canvas. However, the author only briefly describes the various functions of Canvas, but does not elaborate on the academic applications of Canvas. Therefore, the author will slowly explain the application of Canvas in academia later. This issue mainly focuses on the use of Canvas to assist in reviewing and efficiently revising academic articles, and provides a detailed analysis.

Canvas review method

In the past, we used to review articles word for word in order to find out exactly what was wrong with them. And after finding out the problems, we had to make changes to the problem areas by ourselves. Now, with the help of ChatGPT-Canvas, we can not only efficiently and accurately find out the problems of the article, but also use ChatGPT to make one-click changes to the article, ChatGPT can really do where not work where to change.

First of all, let's familiarize ourselves with the Canvas interaction page. The above picture shows the dialog box of ChatGPT on the left, the text editing area on the right, and the shortcut buttons on the bottom right. We can copy and paste the article or paragraph directly into the text editing area, and can edit the article or paragraph directly in the area. Therefore, Canvas can satisfy our needs to review articles or paragraphs manually according to the traditional way of reviewing articles. The "Suggest Edit" shortcut button can automatically review the article or paragraph according to the instructions set by the system. For our more specific reviewing requirements, we can use the ChatGPT dialog box on the left to give customized reviewing instructions. The author will explain and demonstrate this in detail below.

System setup for reviewing manuscripts - "suggested edits"

The "Suggest Edit" shortcut button asks ChatGPT to review the article or paragraph in the text editing area according to the built-in review instructions. This feature is called "One-click Review", and the button is located in the last of the brushes in the lower-right corner, as shown in the figure below:

As shown in the figure above, when we click "Suggest Edit" in the shortcut button, Canvas will automatically review the article according to the built-in ChatGPT review instructions and colorize the problematic parts of the article. At the same time, Canvas will be in the right side of the article in the form of comment markup, the article has been color-coded part of the problem description and suggestions for modification. Then we can edit the color-coded part of the article manually according to the corresponding problems and suggestions. However, even if the problems and suggestions are given, it may still be too much for some of the academics. So we need to continue to understand the Canvas "one-click modification" function.

When we click on the problem statement and suggested changes on the right side of the article, an "Apply" button will appear. This is shown below:

When we click the "Apply" button, ChatGPT will automatically modify the article for us directly according to the modification suggestions it gives. The author likes to call this function "one-click modification". The author gives a comparison of the content before and after the one-click modification in the figure below, so you can judge for yourself.

In summary, Canvas' "Suggested Edits" can act as a "one-click review" for an article, and colorize the problematic section, as well as give specific problems and suggestions for changes to that section. And Canvas gives "Apply" on the comment card on the right side, which can make "one-click modification" to the corresponding color-coded part. And we can click "Suggest Edit" again to review and revise the revised article for the second time if we feel unsatisfied after revision.

However, Canvas' "suggested edits" are based on the built-in ChatGPT review instructions, so they may not meet our review requirements. So we can still review the article manually in the text editing area.

Manual review and customization to allow GPT revisions

Compared to the "one-click review" mentioned above, manual review can find out the problems of the article more carefully and according to your own requirements. Manual review is just more time-consuming and labor-intensive. Since manual review is already more time-consuming, we need to utilize ChatGPT to improve the efficiency of rewriting.

During the manual review process, we can directly use the mouse to select the problematic parts and give suggestions for modification. This is shown in the figure below:

Follow the process shown above. We just need to quote the problematic part, then edit the suggested changes in the input box and click Send. ChatGPT will then run automatically in the dialog box on the left and make changes in the article according to the changes we have entered. In this way, we can greatly reduce the time spent on rewriting and thus increase our efficiency.

So is there a way to get ChatGPT to follow our review requirements, but also to automatically give suggestions for changes and revise them?

Customize instructions for GPT to review and revise

The customized instruction mentioned here is to edit the review instruction according to your own review requirements. This is done as shown in the figure below:

As shown in the above figure, we can send customized review instructions through the ChatGPT dialog box on the left. Then ChatGPT will start to execute the instruction, and at the same time, in the right text editing area, it will color-code the sentence or paragraph where the problem is, and give the corresponding problem description and modification suggestions on the right side of the article. Then we just need to click "Apply" to let ChatGPT make the changes with one click.

The key here is the review instructions. We just need to edit the review instructions according to our own review requirements or our mentor's review requirements. To get the review instructions, follow this public number and send the key words[___reviewer]can be obtained automatically.

Canvas review summary

The main purpose of this issue is to talk about Canvas to assist us in self-review of academic articles. The review demonstration is divided into three scenarios for the three ways, respectively, "one-click review + one-click rewrite", "manual review + one-click rewrite", "customized automatic review + one-click rewrite ". You can choose according to your needs. The sharing of this issue is due to end.
