Microsoft first demonstrated the Deep Search feature in December 2023, and it seems that it's now available to more users.
Microsoft's "Deep Search", an optional generative AI feature designed to help users solve complex problems that don't have simple answers, looks to be rolling out to more users today. Personally, I've seen the "deep search" icon in the upper right corner of the search box after doing a search in Bing. I asked others and they see this icon as well.
What does it look like. This is a screenshot of the "deep search" icon in the upper right corner of the Bing search results page.
When you click on it, it directs you to a page where you can refine your search, then displays the phrase "carefully reviewing your search criteria ......", and then it performs a number of related searches to arrive at the search results.
Bing Deep Search failed to provide any results for the search request [Search Engine Optimization].
However, for search engine optimization company search, it has the above capabilities.
It was a search using [Bing] as an example, and it asked me if I wanted to use a version of [AI Chat].
Is this for everyone?Microsoft's Mikhail Palahin's words sound like it hasn't quite kicked in yet, but everyone I've asked can see it.
How does Deep Search work? It is built on top of Bing's web indexing and ranking system, which uses GPT-4 to parse all possible intents and variations in a query and compute descriptions for them to create the "best possible search results".
After a combination of query techniques, deep search displays content that would not appear in regular search results.
with respect toRanking of deep search results, the most important factor is how well the page matches the Bing extension description. Some of the other mentioned relevance and quality factors include:
- How well the topics match.
- Availability of "appropriate level of detail".
- Whether the source of information is reliable and trustworthy.
- Freshness of information.
- The popularity of the page.
Deep search is slow, very slow. It won't load as fast as regular search results, and Microsoft says that deep searches can take up to 30 seconds to complete. This is something that may make the feature seem underwhelming at first, as most searchers may not have that much patience.
In my own tests, I ran a search, then put the window in the background and came back a while later to check the results and realized it was just too slow.
Why should we be concerned about this? This is another way to utilize AI for search results that may seem to bring in more clicks than Bing Chat, Google Bard or even Google SGE, but time will tell.
However, given the slowness of generating search results, this may discourage most searchers.
