Three students, Youssef Nader, Luke Farritor, and Julian Schillinger, took home $700,000 of the Vesuvius Challenge's one-million-dollar prize, using artificial intelligence to successfully decipher a two-thousand-year-old scroll from the town of Herculaneum, which was destroyed in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. ancient scroll. Their AI model, through pattern recognition, has revealed 2,000 Greek letters (5% of the entire text) that relate to discussions of music and food, which it is hypothesized may have been written by Philodemus, a follower of the ancient Greek philosopher Epicurus. The technology, which has been hailed as a revolution in Greek philosophy, aims to decipher 901 TP3T of the four already-scanned scrolls this year, and possibly even all 800 scrolls found in an 18th-century villa library.
